Keep Aways

Keep aways prevent the player from accessing the obstacle without performing a certain action. Although the action may be trivial, the act of performing endows the player with an awareness of the obstacle to prevent him/her from hitting it accidentally.

▲ In this example, the spring acts as the keep away.

The player was travelling too fast to avoid the spring. Hitting the spring caused the player to become aware of the nearby enemy.

To reach the enemy, the player will have to perform the act of jumping in order to avoid the spring.

The action required is especially trivial. However, without the spring, it is likely that the player would have collided with the enemy. This would have been unfair and frustrating, as when travelling at high speeds it is difficult to anticipate enemies.
