Stage Flow

The level design of the Mega Drive games usually directs the player to the goal, with devices such as springs, fans and speed pads frequently being used to usher the player forwards.
By going against this 'flow' of the stage and moving in an opposite direction to these devices, secret routes can often be found.

▲ In this example,
the stage flow propels the player upwards and forwards.
By breaking this flow and moving downwards, a secret route is uncovered.
