The game’s protagonist, Jin, has been given an updated look, and the trailer showcases music from Sonic Mania’s Tee Lopes, too! The trailer also promises 15 hours of gameplay, which sounds awesome to us.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom will release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch this summer.

It’s been approximately two months (and some change) since we has last seen an update from the devs behind Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. The team states that the lack of info was because of the hard work they were putting into the game, and it definitely shows.

In the latest update, we have some brand new screenshots of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. For some comparison, the devs included and old image and a new image to show the changes they’ve made to the graphics. Pretty! Check ’em out below!

We’ve been eagerly awaiting Game Atelier’s Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom for quite some time now. It was originally supposed to release in 2015, but the developer confirmed it’d need some more time, and a Q1 release would be more likely.

Now, in a new blog post on the Wonder Boy website, Game Atelier confirms the game won’t release in the first half of 2016, citing their desire to release simultaneously on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

“While we get closer to the finishing line, there’s still a lot to do, so please don’t expect a release in the first half of 2016,” the post read. “Since we’re going to release the game simultanously on PS4 and Xbox One – we need an additional buffer for the release window on top of the porting work.”

The post also read that they plan on ramping up marketing for the game, beginning with a PlayStation Blog post going live on March 4 to introduce Monster Boy to a wider audience.

Lastly, Game Atelier acknowledged people’s desire for a Nintendo Wii U and PlayStation Vita port.

“We totally agree that these platforms need to get Monster Boy, too! We love Nintendo! However, it’s impossible for us to work on all portings at the same time. Also, the game needs to sell well enough so we’re able to finance the porting work as it can be very time consuming. Since we don’t have any guarantee for success, we just can’t announce additional platforms at the moment.”

To date, Monster Boy has had a very interesting development cycle. The game started as a Kickstarter project in April 2014, when it was known as Flying Hamster II, the sequel to the original Flying Hamster, but it was obviously paying homage to the Wonder Boy/Monster World series. Midway through its Kickstarter campaign, Game Atelier canceled the project, and shortly after announced it had secured a publisher in FDG Entertainment.

Little was heard about the game until January 2015 when Game Atelier unveiled an overhauled game that included a name change to Monster Boy and that the game would be an official part of the Monster World series as the original creator Ryuichi Nishizawa joined the project.

Monster Boy will be an all-new adventure and as we closely work together with Ryuichi Nishizawa it can be considered as an official part of the series,” Game Atelier announced. “Since the trademark is owned by SEGA we had to pick a different name.”

If you weren’t already excited for Game Atelier’s Monster Boy, the next title in the Monster World/Wonder Boy series, well, this piece of news surely will.

In an update on the game’s official blog, it was announced that legendary video game music composer Yuzo Koshiro, who’s worked on such games as Streets of Rage, Ys and Shenmue, will compose music for Monster Boy.

What’s more, the update stated two of Koshiro’s “friends” will also compose music for the game, but their names will be announced later. Who could they be?!

Monster Boy has had a very interesting development cycle. The game started as a Kickstarter project in April 2014, when it was known as Flying Hamster II, the sequel to the original Flying Hamster, but it was obviously paying homage to the Wonder Boy/Monster World series. This game looks to be every WonderBoy/Monster World’s fan’s dream, and we can’t wait to finally play it. Game Atelier has announced the game will be released in late 2015 on the PlayStation 4 and PC, with more platforms to be announced at a later date.

As we got word that Game Atelier would be developing a Wonder Boy/Monster World inspired game called Monster Boy, we wondered just how official the game would be.

Well, with Ryuichi Nishizawa, the series creator on board, Monster Boy will, in fact, be an official sequel in the series, Game Atelier announced to its Flying Hamster II Kickstarter backers today.

“Monster Boy will be an all-new adventure and as we closely work together with Ryuichi Nishizawa (creator of the original Monster World) it can be considered as an official part of the series,”Game Atelier wrote in its update. “Since the trademark is owned by SEGA we had to pick a different name.”

What’s more, Flying Hamster II has essentially been cancelled and all work moved to Monster Boy.

“We’re thrilled to announce that this beautiful project is no more just a Monster World clone but a real new official part of the series,” Game Atelier wrote. “Once again thanks to both our publisher FDG Entertainment and Mr. Nishizawa who pushed this project in the most incredible good direction.”

If you backed Flying Hamster II’s Kickstarter campaign, you’ll still get a free copy of Monster Boy upon release. Also, Michiru Yamane still plans to lend several tracks to the game.

Game Atelier also noted there will be “tons of new hand-drawn graphics and an improved art style,” with two new transformations to replace the bear and hamster. (We kinda hoped the hamster would have remained as a nod to Flying Hamster II.)

PlayStation 4 and PC versions have been confirmed with more to be announced later.

It was sad to hear that longtime Wonder Boy/Monster World developer Westone filed for bankruptcy last October, signaling a near end to the classic game developer.

However, all hope is not lost for fans of the series as Game Atelier has announced its working on a spiritual successor aptly named Monster Boy and the Wizard of Booze. What’s more, series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa is working with them in some capacity.

Game Atelier launched a Kickstarter campaign in April 2014 for a sequel to Flying Hamster, named Flying Hamster II: Knight of the Golden Seed. That game, we noted, was as much a spiritual successor to the Wonder Boy/Monster World franchise you could get. While things looked good for the success of their campaign, they closed their Kickstarter early as FDG Entertainment came forward to publish the game.

Since then, we haven’t heard much about Flying Hamster II, but it appears that the game might have morphed into Monster Boy.

If you look at the above image from the Flying Hamster II Kickstarter campaign, you’ll notice the far right character is in silhouette.

You’ll notice several of the characters appear to be similar, including the possible protagonist in Monster Boy.

Either way, we’ll try to chase down more information, but you can visit the game’s official website here, although there isn’t much info to be listed as of yet.
